A Patent is a property right concerning an invention granted to an inventor by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a period of up to 20 years from the date of filing an application.  The rights conferred to the inventor include the ability to exclude others from making selling or using the invention in the United States or internationally, if necessary.  An invention is defined as any useful item, machine, composition of matter, or process that is new.  An invention can also be an improvement on an existing item, machine, composition of matter, or process.
